Natasha Vanwasshenova, 28, avoided a sentence of up to life in prison when a charge of delivering a controlled substance resulting in death was dropped last month. She had brought a small amount of heroin to Jonathan Hood, 38, of Rochester, who had requested her and the drugs at his house, her attorney, Charles D. Toby, said today.
Vanwasshenova was sent to the house by a Dearborn-based escort service, and when she arrived, Hood, who already had been drinking, used some of the heroin. The woman began performing a sex act and, according to Toby, Hood collapsed and died shortly afterward.
She called and waited for police and EMS to arrive. In addition to the delivery charge, Vanwasshenova also was charged with delivery of a controlled substance and fraudulent use of a credit card. She pleaded guilty to the less serious delivery charge and no contest to the fraud claim.
Oakland Circuit Judge Leo Bowman sentenced Vanwasshenova to days in jail and two years probation. She was released Tuesday after being held for days.
Toby had an expert review the autopsy and police reports, as well as the testimony in the preliminary examination of the evidence against Vanwasshenova. Heroin was a factor in his death, Dragovic said, but the data collected from the exam revealed more.
Toby said he felt the probation was unnecessary and sets his client up to violate the terms. Vanwasshenova has no car, no job and four children, two of whom live with her mother while the other two are with their fathers.
It will be difficult for her to make probation appointments and pay fines and costs, he said. Contact Staff Writer Alan Burdziak at or aburdziak heritage.
