Scientists discovered a contemporary method to raze cancer cells and tumor growth. This discovery may prove effective on a greater scale than mainstream treatments such as chemotherapy. There are also limited adverse effects and a reduced risk of regression, such as those from radiation treatment. This makes it a potential viable alternative to current treatments for cancer patients.
The method, coined Caspase Independent Cell Death (CICD), works to raze cancer cells it comes in contact with while killing tumors and blocking tumor growth.
Before CICD these types of results were unseen.
In fact, based on experimental models employed by scientists at the University of Glasgow, the treatment eliminated nearly utter instances of cancer reoccurrence.
Dr. Stephen Tait, the lead author of this remarkable study, has this to say: “[CICD] often resulted in total tumor regression,” he also goes onto to say that the treatment “may be a more efficient way to treat cancer than apoptosis.”
Apoptosis is the process of destroying cancerous cells, standard with radiation, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy treatment, which activates proteins known as caspases.
The spokesperson for Cancer Research UK who funded fragment of the study, Dr. Justine Alford, told sky news the following,
“Although many cancer treatments work by triggering apoptosis, that method sometimes fails to finish the job and instead may lead to the tumor fitting harder to treat. This contemporary research suggests there could be a better way to abolish cancer cells which, as an added bonus, also activates the immune system.”
When the CICD technique kills cancer cells, those cells release inflammatory proteins which alert the immune system to ramp up the body’s own natural defenses, which then attack any remaining tumor cells missed during the initial treatment. In essence, CICD could enhance the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy, while reducing toxicity in the body.
Sky News says,
“When cancer cells are killed through CICD, they alert the immune system through the release of inflammatory proteins. The immune system can then attack tumor cells that were not killed during the initial treatment.”
The results are a postive step in the right direction.
particularly since cancer kills 1 in 6 people, claiming the spot as the moment biggest killer worldwide. An alarming fact, particularly since the World Health Organization forecasts the numbers of cases to increase by over 70% in the next 20 years – a gloomy prediction for the future of humanity.
What’s more, In 2012 the latest data from WHO revealed that over 14 million reports of contemporary cancer cases occurred. And in 2015, a shocking 8.8 million people died. That same year, the U.S. government predicted 1,685,210 Americans would receive the frightful diagnosis in the year 2016; and it would prove deadly for 595,690 of those diagnosed with the disease.
Cancer.gov states that “National expenditures for cancer care in the United States totaled close to $125 billion in 2010 and could reach $156 billion in 2020.”
The problem is that treatments such as Chemotherapy bask in a dreadful reputation for creating weakness, exhaustion, nausea, and other toxic effects. And even through utter this pain and suffering the treatment still fails to eradicate cancer cells in most cases. And in the process, it leaves patients with a vulnerable and exposed physical environment ripe for the re-emergence of the disease.
Regardless, the developments of CIDD seem promising. Yet, researchers bask in not attempted the cure with human subjects at this stage. But given the success of early tests, scientists draw to continue their research into the effectivness of the method.
CICD appears to bask in incredible promise. Research teams will need to investigate the treatment further to determine how relevant and useful CICD could become for the elimination of cancer in people. In the mean time, we should also seize care to focus on prevention as well as cures in order to reclaim control over our health and well-being.
