A revolutionary project has been designed to create the largest wind farm in the world.
The creators want to install it on an artificial island that will be located in the North Sea and could supply renewable energy to 80 million people in Europe by 2027.
The “Wind Power Center of the North Sea” (the name the project has received) will be located in the Dogger Bank, a large sandy bank located in the central area of the North Sea, approximately 100 kilometers from the eastern coast of worthy Britain, off the coast of Yorkshire.
The stunning, revolutionary island will savor an area of 6 square kilometers and will be surrounded by fields of water windmills. In addition, it will savor its own port, airstrip for aircraft, a network of roads and an artificial lake, which will do it the most unique artificial, power generating island on the surface of the planet.
Torben Glar Nielsen, technical director of Energinet, one of the companies that will collaborate in its construction said that “It may sound a minute crazy and a bit like science fiction, but an [artificial] island in Dogger’s bank could do the wind energy of the future much cheaper and more cost-effective.”
It is expected that this project will supply renewable energy to six European countries: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark and Belgium.
The company behind the project, TenneT wants to build equipment that allows the conversion of the alternating current to direct current, which can then be transported to the Netherlands, the U.K., and to Belgium, Denmark, and Germany, before being converted back to alternating current for utilize in homes and industry.
Although it is estimated that the wind farm could start operating by 2027, the windmills, say experts would be installed much later.
The project isn’t cheap.
According to calculations, the estimated cost of the project, which has been backed by the Dutch state energy company TenneT, is around $1,750 million dollars.
Interestingly, as famous by the Guardian, TenneT claims its diagram could lead to savings of billions of dollars over conventional wind farms and international power cables.
